Chopper, famously known for his stint on MTV's "Making the Band," revealed that he resorted to using a fake identity to secure his spot on the show. Born in New Orleans, Chopper started rapping at 14 and carried a troubled past into the competition, including being underage at 15 and having an outstanding warrant. Determined to break into the music industry, he used clever tactics to bypass a line of 5,000 hopefuls, calling upon connections and projecting an air of importance to make it to the audition stage. Once selected, Chopper relied on a borrowed identity, allegedly using someone else's name and credentials to navigate contractual dealings and cash checks.

On the morning of Leon Thomas' Tiny Desk concert, many NPR staffers assumed the show was postponed due to a snowstorm in the D.C. area. Not only did he proactively schedule his coast-to-coast flight but he was also 30 minutes early to the office. With his sophomore album, MUTT, Thomas has planted his flag as the most exciting artist in R&B music today. The Tiny Desk had to happen now; nothing would get in the way of divine timing.

Thomas was destined to be an entertainer — he's been doing it for most of his life. His parents were both musicians and introduced him to their world early on. As an actor, he appeared in multiple Broadway plays before becoming a staple on the Nickelodeon network. Under the tutelage of Babyface, he earned his chops as a writer and producer, eventually penning and producing big hits in R&B and hip-hop.

He opens this set with three songs from MUTT and closes with two from 2023's Electric Dusk, including "Breaking Point," which he dedicates to his recently deceased grandfather, the opera singer John Anthony: "This is one of his favorite songs."

Growing up in a tumultuous environment, Chopper recounts a life marked by violence and loss. Abandoned by his mother and left with a father who was sentenced to life for a crime he did not commit directly, Chopper found himself on the streets of New Orleans under the guardianship of his grandmother. With his father out of the picture, Chopper's childhood was overshadowed by hardship and criminal influences. At age 13, he tragically witnessed the murder of his older brother, who was involved in robberies and other criminal activities. The traumatic experience left Chopper with a lasting impact and a desire for retaliation. Without turning to law enforcement, he instead sought vengeance by targeting the shooter's brother, leading to his own stint in boot camp at a young age. Chopper’s subsequent time in foster care offered a brief respite, where he learned essential life skills he never had before.

Chopper, a member of the pioneering reality TV music group Da Band, recounted the mixed emotions tied to their debut album, "Too Hot for TV." While fans propelled the album to platinum status, Chopper harbored disdain for its production. Despite the album's commercial success, financial gain eluded the group. Chopper claimed that apart from advances, the members saw no earnings from Bad Boy Records. The reality of the industry's workings hit hard during the first season, where, according to Chopper, the band was "famous and surviving" without income. Although subsequent seasons promised increased pay, the gains remained unsatisfactory.
